Agentic AI Engineer
Agentic AI Engineer is an engineer who builds LLM agents: systems that carry out multi-step tasks on their own and work reliably in production.
Also known as: AI Agent Engineer, Agent Engineer, AI Agents Developer, LLM Agent Engineer, Applied AI Engineer (Agents).
What does an Agentic AI Engineer do?
An Agentic AI Engineer is an engineer who designs and ships LLM agents: systems that use tools, memory and retrieval to complete multi-step tasks on their own. The core of the job is making an agent work reliably for real users every day, not only in a demo. Strong backend engineering matters as much as ML knowledge:
- designs the agent: which tools it calls, how it plans steps, what it keeps in memory;
- connects the agent to the company's internal systems and APIs;
- builds quality evaluation and guardrails so the agent doesn't take dangerous actions;
- controls the cost and duration of a single task;
- investigates failures in production and makes the agent more robust.
When does a company need an Agentic AI Engineer?
A company needs an Agentic AI Engineer when it wants to automate multi-step work a person used to do: handling requests, working with documents, customer support, operations across several systems. This usually happens after the first LLM features: simple model calls already work, and the next tasks need the model to act on its own. The role isn't needed if one model call or a fixed automation script does the job: an AI / LLM Engineer or a backend developer is enough.
Agentic AI Engineer vs AI / LLM Engineer: what's the difference?
An Agentic AI Engineer differs from an AI / LLM Engineer by building systems where the model chooses the next step and calls tools itself, rather than answering a single request. It is a special case of the AI / LLM Engineer, with higher demands on reliability and control over actions. What sets them apart from a prompt engineer is ownership of the whole system around the model, not the text of the prompt.
Why is it hard to hire an Agentic AI Engineer?
It is hard to hire an Agentic AI Engineer because the field is very young, and almost any developer can put together a demo agent.
- From a CV or GitHub it is hard to tell someone who built a prototype over a weekend from someone who runs agents for thousands of users.
- The combination is rare: strong backend skills, an understanding of how LLMs behave and experience with quality evaluation.
- Agent frameworks change every few months, so experience with a specific stack counts for less than the ability to debug failures.
- Engineers with agents in production are wanted by almost every AI company at once and rarely look for work themselves.
What to decide before hiring an Agentic AI Engineer?
- Which tasks should the agents do, and what happens when they fail? The cost of an error decides how many guardrails and human checks you need and what experience to look for.
- Is there an evaluation setup, or does this person build it? Without evals you can't tell whether an agent got better or worse after a change.
- What matters more: backend depth or ML depth? If the agent mostly works with your systems, you need strong backend skills; if the model work matters more, an ML background.
- Which actions may the agent take without a human? An agent that only reads data and one that sends payments or emails need engineers of different levels.
Where to find an Agentic AI Engineer?
Agentic AI Engineers most often come from AI products and startups where agents already serve users, from automation and integration platforms, and from backend and ML engineers who moved into LLM applications. The signal in a profile is an agent in production the candidate knows the numbers for: task success rate, cost per task, typical failures. Another signal is a notable contribution to open-source agent frameworks. NEWHR finds such candidates by the results of their work, not by applications to a job post.
How to assess an Agentic AI Engineer in an interview?
An Agentic AI Engineer is assessed by a walkthrough of an agent the candidate shipped (architecture, failure cases, evaluation, cost per task) and a work sample: a small agent for one of your scenarios. On the company side, the Head of AI or CTO takes part, along with the lead engineer the candidate will work with.
Strong signals:
- brings up the agent's failures unprompted and explains how they caught them;
- knows the cost of a single task and how they brought it down;
- points out places where an agent isn't needed and plain code will do.
Red flags:
- all of their experience is demos and hackathons;
- can't explain how they check that an agent got better;
- picks a framework before understanding the task.
How long does it take to hire an Agentic AI Engineer?
We present the first candidates for the Agentic AI Engineer role within 5–7 days of the brief. The whole search depends on how rare the profile is: a senior ML team of six took us five months.
